This fund has the aims of:
• supporting work to reduce the risk and occurrence of crime against smaller retailers in 50 priority areas• strengthening local retail partnerships to work collectively to reduce crime and disorder
• identifying creative and effective means to tackle crime against small retailers which can be shared more widely with the business community
The fund includes:
• Small grants worth up to £3,000 for small retailers

• Partnership grants worth up to £50,000 for groups of retailers (e.g. a parade or row of shops) (Now closed)

Applications are expected to contribute to one or more of the following themes to make your shopping district more attractive to customers and your employees:
Theme 1 - Work that reduces the risk and occurrence of crime such as anti-social behaviour, shoplifting, fraud, criminal damage, robbery, burglary, hate crime and violent crime through the installation of equipment within your shop(s)/ retail outlet(s). Theme 2 - Work that adds value to existing crime/anti social behaviour prevention and reduction schemes to improve local shopping districts. Theme 3 – External work that is visible, provides reassurance and builds confidence that shops and shopping areas are safe. Theme 4 - Equipment that help small business work collectively and in partnership with the police and other statutory agencies such as local authorities and fire and rescue authorities.
Theme 5 – Work that supports particularly vulnerable retailers including those in rural and minority communities where crime is a particular problem.
Who can apply?
Small Retailers can check their eligibility and apply for a Small Grant of up to £3,000 AND be part of a Partnership Grant of up to £50,000. Groups of Small Retailers, or those working in partnership with Small Retailers, can nominate a Lead Organisation to apply for a Partnership Grant for up to £50,000. The fund is targeted at a specific Small Retailers and therefore the eligibility includes: location in the 50 Priority Areas (download list here), number of retail outlets, company size and any previous age restricted sales offences.
The Guidance Notes and Section A of each application form clearly takes you through the process of establishing whether you are eligible.
Background Information
The National Retail Crime Steering Group (NRCSG) action plan, which has been drawn up in partnership with the retail industry, details a broad range of actions to tackle crimes against retailers and small businesses. They include:
• a £5m Small Retailer Capital Grants Fund;
• Securing your Business - a self assessment tool, developed by crime prevention experts, which businesses can complete online to identify simple measures they can take to reduce the risk of crime; and
• a competition to find new ways of 'designing out' crime opportunities in small businesses, which will be launched in September 2009. More information will follow shortly.
